iOS 26: A new name, new design, and more

After many years, Apple is changing the design of iOS for the first time. iOS is the software that powers the iPhone.

Before diving into the features, it’s important to note that the name “iOS 26” is directly related to the year it will be released. From now on, all updates will be named according to their release year.

At the same time, this software has not yet been officially released and is expected to be available this fall.

Now, let’s look at the key features of iOS 26:

1) Sleek and Transparent Design
iOS 26 now features a design language Apple calls Liquid Glass. The new menus have a shiny, frosted-glass-like appearance, and many UI elements have softer edges and a sense of depth. As the name suggests, this glass-like design aims to be both simple and intuitive.

2) Apple Intelligence
Apple says it will now integrate Apple Intelligence into various parts of the device to increase efficiency. One example is real-time text translation. The iPhone will automatically detect messages in non-English languages and translate them into English so users can read them already translated.

3) App Interface Redesigns
The Camera and Photos apps will receive long-awaited functional design updates. These apps will now adopt a simplified interface. Meanwhile, the Messages and Phone apps will take a stronger stance against unwanted messages and calls.

It’s easy to see that Apple aims to minimize window switching within apps and reduce the number of user interactions.

4) Visual Intelligence
Built on Apple Intelligence, Visual Intelligence will be integrated into the iPhone screen. This means users can take a screenshot of what they want to search visually, select the visual element, and search for similar images or products on Google, Etsy, and other supported apps.

5) Apple Music and Wallet Updates
With Lyrics Translation, Apple Music users will be able to understand the lyrics of songs, and with Lyrics Pronunciation, they’ll be able to sing along regardless of language barriers. The AutoMix feature will manage transitions between songs like a DJ.

In Wallet, users can now choose to pay in installments or use rewards while shopping with Apple Pay, making everyday interactions with the physical world easier than ever. The refreshed boarding pass also introduces Live Activities, providing real-time flight updates and the ability to share that information with others.
